Stirling Pupils “Count & Grow” |
|
The
Count and Grow potato growing project is run nationally by the Royal
Highland Education Trust (RHET) and is sponsored by the Clydesdale Bank.
There are 30 schools taking part in Forth Valley, and this year the
compost has been kindly donated by Stirling Council through the Waste
Education Officer (Schools), Avril Robertson, which comes from the
brown recycle bins. Pupils will learn mathematical and IT skills through
measuring, graphing and weighing the potatoes. The project is also
supported by local farmers Lynne Reid, Plean Farm, John Owen, Muirpark

RHET Support for
Lornshill Academy S2s |

Lornshill Academy’s S2
Home Economics pupils recently benefited from curricular support in areas
such as Health Promotion, Hungry for Success, Excellence in Education, and
Eco-School topics during informative interactive workshops delivered by
the Royal Highland Education Trust (RHET). Each workshop focused on
natural, additive-free food sources, dairy products, fresh meat, fruit,
vegetables and cereal foods. Representatives from Quality Meat Scotland
presented a display of locally-produced meats and a comparison of 100%
meat burgers with economy versions. FVFL encouraged healthy eating by
promoting producers of fresh fruit and vegetables through the ‘Find it,
Eat it’ local food directory. Graham’s Dairies contributed milk for every
pupil at the end of the presentation. RHET Forth Valley Countryside
Initiative provides support from the farming industry for education in
schools. Their local co-ordinator is Katreen Millar who can be contacted
on 07841 634528. (Source, Lynne Reid, RHET). (30 Mar 07) |

Stirling Pupils 'Eat
Themselves Gorgeous'! |
|
|
Stirling Council have urged high
school pupils to 'eat themselves gorgeous'! through the newly-launched
Hungry for Success Initiative in secondary schools. The initiative,
officially set underway by Provost Colin O'Brien on 6 December 2006, aims
to improve nutrition in school meals and increase the take-up of schools
meals by pupils.
Through the student forum and a
school meals' survey, the menus have changed to offer a healthier range of
foods than chips every day and 'deep fried re-constituted chicken
nuggets'. At the launch, guests, including FVFL, were invited
to sample some of the healthy choices, from home-made soup from 'The
Souper Bowl', salads from 'The Mix', breads and fillings from 'The
Fill', baked potatoes and fillings from 'Smart Jackets', to fruit
smoothies and fresh fruit from 'Tutti Fruity'.
The initiative has now been
rolled-out to all 7 secondary schools across the Stirling area.
