'Eat the Street',
"The Best Thing..." |
|

Forth Valley Food Links and partners held a successful on-street allotment in Callendar Riggs, (next to the
Callendar Square Shopping Centre), Falkirk Town Centre, from 7 - 10
September 2006.
The project aimed to encourage individuals and communities
to think about growing their own food – even if they have only a very
small space available – and also offered support for a call from
Friends of the Earth Forth Valley and other individuals, for more allotments in the Falkirk area.
The project was officially opened by Depute Provost Ricky Wilson on
Thursday, 7 September at 2.00 pm, and linked to a healthy cooking
demonstration run by Forth Valley College
students and staff, and Quality Meat Scotland that focused on the best use of freshly harvested
vegetables.
The project was timed to co-incide with other events happening at this time -
Scottish Food Fortnight
(1 - 17 September), Falkirk Farmers' Market, (10 September), and
Organic Fortnight
(2 - 17 September 2006).
The project was funded by
Falkirk Environment Trust and
Scottish
Natural Heritage, with main sponsors, Falkirk Town Centre Management
Ltd,
Callendar Square Shopping Centre Management,
Ian Welsh (Allotments Regeneration Initiative Mentor) & Lorraine Hay,
Gleesons Construction
Services Ltd,
Falkirk Council's
many services
(Community Education,
Education Services, Employment &
Training Unit, Estates, Licensing, Planning & Transportation), and Mike &
Marion Robinson, Kirkland Farm.
We are extremely grateful to these, and all of our other partners and
friends for their support. We believe that this project was an prime
example of partnership working at its best.
