Loch Lomond Food & Drink Festival 7 - 9 September
Final touches are being put to this year's festival programme.  The event also includes the Loch Lomond Real Ale Festival and takes place on the banks of Loch Lomond at Loch Lomond Shores in Balloch.

Big Plans for Smallholders
Are you a smallholder who wants to get together with fellow-smallholders for advice, sharing ideas or socialising, or have you ever wanted to set up a smallholding but didn't know how to go about it? 
 
Help is on its way, with the proposal to set up a new Smallholders Association for Forth Valley (covering Stirling, Falkirk & Clackmannanshire) and West Fife. The focus would be on these areas but anyone would be welcome to join.  Smallholders' associations operate throughout the UK, but it is thought that there are none in the local area. 
 
The idea has come from a Clackmannanshire smallholder, Rosemary Champion (the Accidental Smallholder - www.accidentalsmallholder.net), who is keen to set up a group for smallholders to share their interest in growing and rearing food as naturally as possible. 
 
Rosemary said, "We get a lot of requests through our website www.accidentalsmallholder.net) for information - some of it from people based reasonably locally, but we don't know each other and have no forum for making contact. Often, smallholders are trying to combine full-time or part-time jobs with working on the land - and that makes for an awfully busy life, so sometimes making contact with others who can help and support you is well down the priority list.
 
If local smallholders like us can get together and establish some common purposes, then
the whole will be greater than the sum of the parts. And it might just be fun, too",
Rosemary added.
 
Suggested activities include:  advice and support, social meetings / events with guest speakers, seed / plant exchange, for sale/ wanted, an equipment pool, a stall at Farmers' Markets to sell surplus produce, members' discounts at suppliers. Other ideas would be very welcome.
 
Once interest is known, there will be an inaugural meeting before Christmas - date and venue to be set to suit most people.

This is an excellent opportunity for those interested in growing and rearing their own food to share their interest, experiences and resources with like-minded people.

Masterclass with Iain Tolhurst: successful horticulture enterprises, Falkland Estate, Fife, Soil Association, 7 August 2007
This training day, organised by the Soil Association Scotland, will assume a basic knowledge of organic horticulture and will cover: rotations; tilling; green manures; mulching; weed control; pest control; harvesting; storage and refrigeration; yields and gross margins of different crops and varieties; how the theory and practice of organic production relates to standards.  Iain will also be open to discussing  other topics raised on the day. Chiller Cabinet Wanted
An newly-established organic fruit and vegetable producer is looking for a chiller cabinet preferably not too far away from the Meigle area. The cabinet should be about 1.5m to 3m long (that's about 5 - 10 feet in old money!), with or without shelving, for around £500 or less. The cabinet must plug into an ordinary 13 amp plug (not three phase). Caterers that source fresh, local produce are hard to find. However, Forth Valley has the good fortune to have one of the most sustainable caterers in the business based in the area.

Forth Valley Food Links first came across Wendy Gudgeon when looking for a caterer for the 'Sustainable Food Procurement in the Public Sector' seminar lunch in 2004. Spotlight on... Wester Carmuirs Farm Shop
Earlier this year, Sheila Taylor, her husband and sons decided to diversify and open a farm shop at the family-run Wester Carmuirs Farm, near the Falkirk Wheel, with the aim of selling fresh, in-season produce, sourced from the farm, the local area and from Scotland. 

The farm already had a loyal customer base for their farm-produced ‘Maris Piper’ and ‘Golden Wonder’ potatoes, and the shop is now attracting more customers as it becomes more widely known.  

Local produce is very much to the fore - reflecting the values of the Taylor family, and their desire to encourage more people to eat more local food - with labels indicating the origin of the produce. There are mushrooms from Central Scotland Mushrooms near Fallin (Tel: 01786 818881), jams and chutneys from Catherine’s Country Kitchen (Tel: 01506 828535, email: cckchutney@aol.com),  local honey, tablet made in Bonnybridge, and Sheila’s home-made jam. Other Scottish produce such as turnips, cabbage, herbs, free-range eggs, and oatcakes is also available. 

FVFL has been supporting Sheila both to source produce from the area and help promote the business. She is keen to expand the range of produce available and would like to hear from other producers or suppliers who could help in this regard. 

The farm shop itself is very accessible, being situated on the A803 between the Falkirk Wheel and Bonnybridge, and has ample car parking space. It is open from 10.00 am – 6.00 pm on Wednesday to Saturdays, and from 12.00 pm to 4.00 pm on Sundays, and is closed Mondays and Tuesdays.

‘Maris Piper’ potatoes are available at 30p per kilo / £6 per 25kg bag, and ‘Golden Wonder’ at 80p per kilo / £8 per 25kg bag.

Calls for Farmers’ Market to Go ‘Under Cover’
Bernard Barker, the Chair of Stirling Farmers’ Market Group, has called for support in re-locating Stirling Farmers’ Market to a more permanent site that is wholly, or partially under cover. The current situation, he maintains, is far from ideal, as farmers’ markets are at the mercy of the weather, and therefore may be ‘hit or miss’ for shoppers. He has called for a multi-use facility that would include space for cookery demonstrations, educational food activities and box schemes.
This year, four additional ‘themed’ markets are planned for Stirling, the first being run in Port Street in May. Three more will run in summer, autumn and Christmas, in addition to Stirling Farmers’ Market’s current location in Maxwell Place on the second Saturday of each month. Briarlands Farm Grows More than Fruit!
The new fruit season starts at Briarlands Farm, Blairdrummond this year on Friday, 25 May when the farm and its attractions will be open for business. There will be a new Jumping Pillow for the children whilst adults can purchase fresh raspberries, strawberries and vegetables from the farm shop, or enjoy a coffee and home-baking in Mary’s Kitchen.

The Accidental Smallholder and ‘Backyard Poultry Keeping’ Course
For anyone seeking inspiration in moving towards self-sufficiency, there’s a wealth of information, and a great diary of happenings on their smallholding, available from The Accidental Smallholder, located on the banks of the Forth in Clackmannanshire. They are offering an opportunity to attend a course covering all the essential aspects of keeping poultry in your backyard. This one-day ‘Backyard Poultry Keeping’ course on Saturday, 30 June, Alloa, Clackmannanshire, will look at:
  • Buying hens
  • Housing and bedding
  • Feeding
  • Basic health care
  • Rules and regulations

If you would like to produce your own fresh eggs from your own hens but just haven’t “plucked” up the confidence to get started, then the Accidental Smallholders can help.
The day starts at 10am, and will cover all the essential aspects of successful backyard poultry keeping. You’ll get the opportunity to handle the hens and see how the theory translates into practice. There will be opportunities for questions and discussion before finishing at 4pm.

Calling Organic Producers!
The Soil Association is currently producing a document for schools that are looking to procure organic produce as part of the Food For Life programme. The programme specifies that school meals must be cooked from 75% fresh and unprocessed, 50% local, and 30% organic ingredients. Schools must also provide better classroom education on food, cooking, nutrition and health and ensure that all children visit a farm at least once during their time at school.

Kirkland Farm’s Health-giving Sheep
Our thanks to Mike & Marion Robinson who agreed to grow some salad vegetables for FVFL’s ‘Take-Away Garden’ raised bed at the Alloa Community Orchard Spring Fayre.  However, someone forgot to tell the sheep who managed to chomp their way through them at the farm!  An article in the Green Futures magazine (No 64 May/June 2007) talks of the joys of 'ecological food' and that when sheep graze biodiverse pastures, their meat contains significant levels of healthy nutrients previously only identified with oily fish. Sounds like the health-giving properties of the Robinson’s sheep will indeed be significant after this! (16 May 2007)
 
New Season at YourLocalFarm
Ian Scott reports busy times at Your Local Farm as a new season begins with ploughing and planting, with a promise of more salad vegetables in your box, over the next few weeks. As ever, if you have any favourites which you don't presently receive in your box, let Ian know and he will do his best to include them. There is still fresh beef available at the moment, which is being delivered on a Wednesday evening. If you are interested, please let Ian know by the start of the week.

Also planned is a Farm Open Day on Saturday, 16 June at the farm to allow customers and their friends and family to come and see where the vegetables you are eating come from. There will be guided nature walks through an area of herb rich grass and wetlands. For the children, there will be pony rides and a bouncy castle. Home baking, food and refreshments will be available. Everyone is welcome and nearer the time more details will be available. Loch Lomond Festival of Food and Fun - 19 June 2007
This is a family fun day and farmers’ market sponsored by the National Park and Stirling Council. The day will showcase the best local food and drink producers as well as outdoor activity providers. The luxury lodges and new Osprey Rooms Restaurant will also have an open day and the 18 acres of the resort’s loch shore open space will be open to the general public. KIT-OUT the Park
Tourism businesses and suppliers operating in the National Park are being targeted as part of the Kit-Out The Park Project (Knowledge, Innovation and Technology Out of University into Tourism) being run by Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park Authority, Scottish Enterprise Dunbartonshire and Glasgow Caledonian University.  Food technology is one of the focuses of the project, to make it easier for small and medium sized businesses to find out about new technologies and scientific developments available to develop innovative solutions to business problems.  Other areas are: sustainable construction; IT / communications; green tourism / renewable technology; and yield management.

Alva to host Scottish Food Fest 2007
The Wee Country Development Trust (WCDT) is organising a food festival to close Scottish Food Fortnight (1 - 16 September). The festival is targeting tourists, members of food and drink associations, food producers, manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers and the general public, and will promote the importance of Scottish produce in international cuisine. Stirling Compost is 'King of the Castle'!
Well done to Stirling Council for putting its money where its mouth is by producing and providing a very sustainable product from Stirling residents' garden waste and cardboard.  The waste is shredded and composted to make Castle Compost, one of the first in Scotland to achieve the British Standards Institute's PAS100 quality certificate.  The compost is available free, when available, to Stirling residents from the Lower Polmaise Household Waste Recycling Centre, near Fallin.  There is a limit on the number of bags that residents can take.  For further details phone 0845 277 7000 or visit www.stirling.gov.uk/waste. Catherine's 'Factor X' Chutney Competition
A hhhhot Challenge for Catherine's 'Factor X' Chutney "The life of a chutney maker is never dull"! So says Catherine Neil of Catherine's Country Kitchen who has been asked by the Isle of Whithorn to produce a chutney for their Hamefarin' weekend on 1 - 2 September. Unfortunately, the chutney doesn't have a name, so if anyone would like to have a go at naming it (at present called 'Factor X') then a presentation basket of a selection of Catherine's produce (with some additional surprises added) awaits the winner! The chutney is hhhhot and tart - not for the faint hearted!

FVFL at Café Helix
FVFL recently attended the Helix Project partners’ event at ‘Café Helix’ the Falkirk Wheel.  The event was held to inform and involve key organisations and individuals in the Helix Project, an ambitious plan to transform the landscape between Falkirk and Grangemouth into a “thriving environmental community”.

FVFL’s input helped to raise the profile of local food and its links with health, a subject that gained much support throughout the day.  Discussions on food focused on the opportunities for involvement by local people, for example, the establishment of allotments, home-grown food, school food growing projects, and wild food.  All information will be fed into a £25m bid to The Big Lottery Fund to be submitted before the end of May.  For further details on the Helix visit http://www.falkirkonline.net/helix/helix.aspx (and check out the ‘the Kelpies’!). Food Sustainability ‘Towards Tomorrow’ 2007
FVFL held a stall at the ‘Towards Tomorrow’ sustainable lifestyle event, organised by the Community Planning Partnership and CVS Clacks at the Cochrane Hall in Alva recently.  ‘Do You Know Where Your Food Comes From?’, was the question asked of visitors to the table, who had an opportunity to play a table-top game to find out about the origins and sustainability of apples from South Africa bought at a supermarket, and strawberries from Briarlands Farm, Blairdrummond, bought directly from the farm.

FVFL is working with the Community Food Development Workers and Forth Environment Link to develop this game about food sustainability issues.  The game is based on the original ‘Food Miles’ game by Eve Keepax at Forth Environment Link, and will be available for loan in due course.(16 May 2007)
 

FVFL Springs into Action at Alloa Community Orchard Spring Fayre
FVFL will be holding a ‘Take-Away Garden’ at the Alloa Community Orchard’s Spring Fayre on Saturday, 26 May from 11.00 am – 4.00 pm in the Walled Garden (Wimpy Park), Pine Grove, Alloa.  The ‘garden’ will provide practical ideas and information for visitors to 'take-away', to inspire them to grow their own food, and make links with locally-grown, seasonal food. (The idea is similar to the 'Eat the Street' temporary allotment project that we ran in Falkirk High Street in September 06).

The small plot will contain elements that will inspire people to grow their own food, together with an adjoining information stall on where to find local food in the local area.  There will be demonstration containers and small raised bed of edible plants (salad leaves and herbs, some supplied by Ian Scott), and a practical seed-planting session, where visitors can plant their own herb or salad seeds in a paper pot to take home.  FVFL is also supporting Scottish Biodiversity Week and will give away wildflower seeds – with thanks to Scottish Natural Heritage – and distribute the Garden for Life’s ‘Garden for Food’ leaflets. 

The Spring Fayre is organised by The Alloa Community Orchard and partners, and will promote environmental issues, community safety, recycling, physical activity, health and wellbeing through workshops, dance demonstrations, beauty therapy, children’s activities, music and food, in a hands on and fun way.  (16 May 2007)
 

Allotments for Falkirk Helix Project?
Community allotments have been included in the design proposals for a  new Eco-Park to be submitted to the Big Lottery Fund in May.

The scheme, known as the Helix Project, is a large area (300 hectares) between Falkirk and Grangemouth, that will be transformed into a multi-use development.  However, the allotments will only be developed if there is sufficient support for the idea among the communities of Falkirk and Grangemouth. 

Partners Falkirk Council, British Waterways and Central Scotland Forest Trust have already secured £250,000 from the Big Lottery Fund to develop the project, and will be bidding for £10 - £25m for the implementation phase. (30 Mar 07)
 

A fond farewell to Dr Malcolm McWhirter
FVFL bade a fond farewell to Dr Malcolm McWhirter, NHS Forth Valley Director of Public Health, who leaves his post today to become a Senior Medical Officer with the Scottish Executive.

Calling Local Producers - Be a Healthy Start Supplier!
Suppliers of fresh fruit and vegetables are being invited to sign up for the Healthy Start Scheme run by the Department of Health. 

The scheme helps pregnant women and children under four in low-income families to eat healthily.  People on the scheme receive vouchers which they can exchange for fruit and vegetables, liquid cow’s milk, as well as infant formula milk.  If you sell any of these items, then you can register as a supplier, whatever food outlet you are - and you don’t have to sell them all.

Gartartan Farm Shop Comes HomeAfter locating their farm shop at Ward Toll Nurseries, the Nicolson family have converted their old dairy and have moved the farm shop back to Gartartan Farm.

The farm shop offers a wide range of meats and other produce, reared on the farm, sourced locally, or British.  Meat boxes are available with a range of quality meats - beef, lamb and mutton, all bred and reared on the farm, free range chickens and duck reared locally, wild venison sourced from McNaughtons of Balquhidder, and pork and bacon from Ramsays of Carluke.  The shop also stocks a large selection of homebaking, homemade pies and ready meals.

Help Needed at Yourlocalfarm
Yourlocalfarm at Balquhatstone Farm, Slamannan, is currently advertising for someone to help with the vegetable growing.  If there are any keen gardeners who would like a challenge, the farm is offering an allotment scheme, where they would prepare the ground and would guarantee to buy the produce at a set price. 

Throughout the year, there are also different meats on offer; beef, lamb, pork, turkey and venison. As with the vegetables, meat is sourced locally as well as being reared at Balquhatstone.  The animals are raised in a free range manner and the farm’s aim is to give them a happy and content life.

A Taylor & Son of Carmuirs, has now opened a farm shop at the family-run Wester Carmuirs Farm, West Carmuirs Loan, Carmuirs.

The organisers of the BBC Good Food Show Scotland are looking for local food businesses to take a stand at the BBC Good Food Show Scotland, on 2-4 November 2007 at the SECC, Glasgow.  The anticipated Show Profile is: 200 exhibitors; 15,000+ visitors - 70% female; £70 average spend per visitor; 60% of visitors want to find, taste & try new food and drink products; the audience will be influenced by the show in how they shop and cook; visitors will travel 2 hours + to visit the show.

There will be entertainment by celebrity chefs and cookery demonstrations to 500 visitors, 7 times a day = 3,500 visitors daily, and 7 demonstrations in the Tasting Theatre to 700 show goers everyday.  In terms of marketing support, the aim is to deliver an audience of genuine food and drink lovers to the SECC.  They will be conscious about what they eat, spend a higher proportion of their income on food & drink and are interested in quality and the issues surrounding food and drink sourcing.  There will be significant support of BBC titles such as Good Food and olive magazines, and a targeted approach conveying the gourmet food experience that the show will offer including:- BBC Support, Direct Mail, Regional Advertising & Outdoor Advertising, Radio Campaign, National Press Advertising, Website and eCRM, Field Marketing, Third Party Promotions & PR.

The Shell Scheme costs £195 per square metre and Space, £175 per square metre.

'Eyes-West' for a new 'Buy Local' visitor map
Keep an eye out this summer for the new Buy Local visitor map which will be available from Tourist Information and Visitor Centres from Easter. The map shows the local food and drink producers, local food eateries and shops selling local food and drink in and around the
Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park.  Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park area boasts some of the best local produce in Scotland, ranging from seafood in the west to strawberries in the east.  Visitors come to our area to see and experience our beautiful environment, now they can taste the product of it too!

This is the next phase of the Buy Local initiative which was launched last year with the production of the local food and drink business directory.  Buy Local is supported by Lomond & Rural Stirling LEADER+ Programme, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park Authority, Stirling Council and West Dunbartonshire Council. Bruce Crawford MSP to Visit FVFL
Forth Valley Food Links is set to host a visit from Bruce Crawford (SNP), Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP, in February. 

Mr Crawford is on a pre-election fact-finding tour of Small to Medium Size Enterprises, and is looking to see what can be done to make these businesses more effective.   Any issues that arise through the course of these consultations will be fed back into policies and motions in the Parliament.

FVFL Project Officer, Diane Alderdice, said, "The SNP are currently voicing their support of Scottish farmers, so we look forward to discussing with Mr Crawford, the issues surrounding sustainable food production and consumption in Forth Valley.  We have a number of years' experience of working with local producers, and will be keen to share these with him later this month". Launch of New Fruit Barras in Clacks

Coalsnaughton Regeneration Group has launched a new Fruit Barra in the village to supply fresh fruit and vegetables to  the local community.  Group members Nan Dougal, Marion Coutts and Jeanette Taylor, with support from Debbie Ross, the NHS Forth Valley Community Food Development Worker, have been the driving force behind the project, a not-for-profit enterprise.

The Fruit Barra, launched on 20 January in Coalsnaughton Village Hall, aims to make a wide-range of fruit and vegetables available at affordable prices to the local community.  It will open from Monday to Friday from 9.30 am - 5.00 pm, and on Saturday mornings from 10.00 am - 1.00 pm. 

The project was warmly welcomed by the local people that attended, and by local Councillor Derek Stewart.  Councillor Stewart said, “It is good to see people in the village supporting this.  People have been queuing up outside to get in.  There are a number of older people here, and they recognise the value of fresh and healthy food.  This is the ethos of the project.  I welcome the project on behalf of the community and hope it is a great success".  He also added, “Is there one planned for Sauchie?!”

One customer said, 'The quality is good, and the prices are comparable to the supermarkets.  It’s not like Tesco’s where you buy more than you need so that a lot goes to waste.  You can buy as much as you need here.  I’m trying to get my kids to put fruit in their piece boxes for school!'. 

Others made the point that the project should help stimulate more interest by younger people in cooking and healthy eating. “It’s a generational thing.  It’s the young ones that should be here with their children”.

Group member Nan Dougal expressed the hope that a cooking group will develop later in the summer to demonstrate what can be made from the fresh ingredients, and to provide support for people in preparing and cooking the produce .  There is also the possibility that the fruit barra willbeing able to accept the Healthy Start vouchers in future.

New volunteers are  welcome to help in selling the produce to customers, and full training will be given.  The group can also offer advice and support for people to prepare and cook the vegetables.

The Tullibody Healthy Living Initiative has also launched a new Tullibody, Cambus & Glenochil Fruit Barra.  As with the Coalsnaughton Fruit Barra, the project will sell a wide range of fruit and vegetables, made-up soup packs, and also provide recipe ideas.  The barra is located at the Tullibody Healthy Living Office, 13 Tron Court, Tullibody.

Dr Sylvia Jackson, MSP for Stirling has revealed that FVFL can help her fulfil one of her New Year's resolutions, to ditch the convenience food and buy more fresh, local food.

In her column in the Stirling Observer (20 January 2007), Dr Jackson has said that she aims to enjoy a healthier lifestyle this year, helped by information on where to shop for local food from FVFL's website.

Christmas Orders at Yourlocalfarm

Ian & Roanna Scott have launched a new website at www.yourlocalfarm.co.uk and are now taking orders for Christmas.

They will be on holiday during the first week in January and suggest increasing the order for that period.

The bacon and ham joints will be available in about a week; there is also some pheasant.

In your box this week there will be Purple Sprouting Broccoli, as the name suggests it is from the broccoli family.

Ocean Terminal Local Food Exhibition
This event is being organised by Larder Bytes Ltd in conjunction with Ocean Terminal in Leith. Larder Bytes would be keen to hear from anyone in Forth Valley interested in the event.

Larder Bytes Ltd provides supply chain management services to the local food sector in Scotland. It is a small company located in Fife with networks in Fife and The Cairngorms National Park. Over the past three months they have been working with Ocean Terminal in Edinburgh to create an event supporting the benefits to health, the environment, agriculture, fisheries and the economy brought about by the use and purchase of local Scottish produce.

The event will take place over 13th and 14th October (with an estimated 12,000 visitors per day), during the Scottish Food Fortnight in September and will be advertised as a key location within the programme. It is supported by Visit Scotland, Scottish Food and Drink, and Ocean Terminal's marketing and management team.

The event supports the benefits brought about by the purchase of local Scottish produce, and the focus is to raise awareness of the quality and availability of local food and drink in Scotland and to encourage food service, retail and the general public to make better use of Scotland's tremendous variety of high quality food and drink. There will be 10 representatives from each region of Scotland if possible

There has been agreement from 4 of Scotland's top hotels and attractions to supply chefs to demonstrate cooking local regional produce.

In order to set the tone of the event it is planned to have either a pipe or drum band at the entrance to welcome visitors to the event and for Scottish music to be heard throughout the two days inside the venue.

Every effort is being made to make this a no-cost event and the intention is to adapt the event to the available funding. The minimum requirement will be for public indemnity cover for the event. Needless to say even these costs will be dependent upon the number of participants.

The event will use the entire shopping complex at Ocean Terminal and provisional agreement for the following outline plan has been obtained;

Entrance and ground floor: It is intended to set the scene for the visitor with either a pipe and or drum band at the entrance and use the ground floor to give out produce to taste as samples and the encourage visitors to the middle floor.

Middle floor and food terrace: As the key message for the event is local food the restaurants on the food terrace are being encouraged to focus on promoting local produce over those two days. In addition four chefs will demonstrate how to cook particular regional dishes. These demonstrations will be recorded and played on a cinema size screen in the
restaurant area. Also on the upper floor we intend to employ a traditional band to create the atmosphere and as part of the demonstrations visitors will be directed to the top floor.

Top Floor: On the top floor, there will be 9000 square feet of exhibition space. It is intended to create a food village representing the regions of Scotland. Each region will consist of a food Island containing four primary producers, two processors or merchants and four customers (hotels or retail outlets). It is hoped to attract about ninety participating
companies.

Through Larder Bytes' work with the Parliament, the Media as well as the BBC's Landward Team every effort is being made to encourage media participation to the event to help promote Scotland and our tremendous range of local food and drink. (30 August 2006)
 
Park Primary School Healthy Breakfast Success
Park Primary School
came out top of the class for a competition to design a Healthy Breakfast poster. 

The competition was held by Clackmannanshire Council's Hungry for Success Team to target primary schools in the county, and persuade others to eat a healthy breakfast.  The attractive posters conveyed a simple message, and shared information about healthy eating and the importance of taking breakfast.  The posters also encouraged parents and carers to consider the benefits of buying local food for the breakfast items.

The standard of entries was very high. The other Highly Commended entries were from St Mungos, Fishcross, Menstrie, Tillicoultry, Clackmannan primary schools.  The breakfast spread was prepared by the kitchen staff at Lornshill Academy.(1 June 2006)
 

Food at the Fling a Success!
FVFL
was delighted to have been asked by the organising committee to manage the food tent at the Doune & Dunblane Fling on 28 May, and equally delighted by the willingness of the producers to attend. The event offered an opportunity to support the local economy by encouraging local, small-scale producers supplying fresh, quality ingredients.

In keeping with the Medieval theme, there was a mouth-watering hog roast by Heritage Meat & Game plus beefburgers and bacon rolls. Honey and preserves were on sale from Honey Et Cetera of Callander, and Balqhuidder Braes Farm Shop offered local honey, jam, sweets, and soap. Freshly-picked spinach was also available from Kirkland Farm in Denny, and strawberry jam from Briarlands Farm.

Plenty of choices for snacking or grazing were on offer. Sustainable local caterer, Life is Good Food from Kippen, supplied Fair Trade teas and coffees, juices and cordials, filled rolls, and muffins, while delicious home-baking and tray bakes were available from Achray Breads from Brig o'Turk. For those with a very sweet tooth, Threepwood Fayre satisfied those sugar-cravings with a chocolate fountain and home made confectionary.

No Medieval fayre would be complete without beer, so the Tryst Brewery in Falkirk sold a selection of bottled beer as a perfect accompaniment to wash it all down.

A'maizing' New Farm Shop at Briarlands

, Blairdrummond, opened a new farm shop on Saturday 28 May.  Briarlands Farm is a working farm run by the Inglis family and offer a new farm shop stocked with their own and local, seasonal, fresh fruit and vegetables, local crafts, and teas, coffees and home-baking from Mary's Kitchen.

One of the biggest attractions will be the Amaizing Maize Maze which will be open in mid-July, August and September, 9.30 - 5.30pm, last admission 4,30pm (admission charge for Maize Maze and Play Area).

Depute Provost and Pupils 'Eat the Street'!
Falkirk Council's Depute Provost Ricky Wilson
and pupils from Langlees Primary School, and Queen Street Nursery School attended a photocall on 17 May, to launch of the 'Eat the Street' Project.  The project is being organised by FVFL and will take place from 6 - 13 September as part of the Flavour of Forth Valley Food Festival.

The project will be a temporary street allotment, and will show people that they can grow fruit and vegetables even if they don't have a garden or allotment.  It also supports Friends of the Earth Forth Valley's call for allotments in the Falkirk area.

Volunteers are required to help grow the fruit and vegetables in old pots and containers, and also to help with building and taking down the allotment, and being information guides throughout the week.  To help volunteer please contact us.(1 June 2006)

Spuds-We-Like - Potato Day in Dunblane
Way back in October, Dunblane Garden Club had an illustrated talk on ‘The Potato’ given by Alan Romans.  As a result of the enthusiasm and interest kindled by Alan, it was decided to hold a Potato Day on 11 March.  The only other event of this type held in Scotland is down in the Borders so this was a step into the unknown.  To share costs and spread the workload, the event was a joint venture between the Garden Club and Dunblane Allotment Group.

We had great fun when a ton of seed tatties (nearly 50 modern and heritage varieties) arrived at the Cathedral Hall and had to be split up, labelled and displayed.  All went well on the day with tremendous interest from the public, some coming from far and wide in order to track down a rare variety.  After such a success, the Potato Day for 2007 is already being planned, so look out for future announcements.

New Food Networks Launched
February and March saw the launch of two new community food networks for Forth Valley, one in Clackmannanshire and one in Falkirk.
The Community Food Partnership, whose membership is predominantly based in Stirling, has been running for some years and it was decided to develop the two new groups to have direct input into food issues relevant to local communities. 
Community Food Development, part of the NHS Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, worked with FVFL to set up the two launch meetings. 
Falkirk Food Network met on 22 February at Falkirk CVS and the Clackmannanshire meeting was on 1 March at Sauchie Hall. Both meetings were well attended and community groups showed an interest in developing local food growing and distribution initiatives.

Braveheart Falkirk in Good Heart
The second Braveheart Falkirk Healthy Living event took place in Larbert in March.  Braveheart aims to improve the heart health of the local population. 

The main event was a seafood cookery demonstration, and there were other food-related stalls - a local fishmonger, and fruit tastings by ASDA. 

FVFL had a stall with samples of a fresh vegetable box and fruit pack from Slamannan Food Producers’ Co-op, 5 varieties of potato grown at Pleanmill Farm by John Scott (available from his farm), and from Roberton’s Greengrocer in Stenhousemuir. 

 The local food directory, ‘Find it, Eat it’ was distributed, and FVFL’s Manager Alex Fowles talked to people about local produce, where to source it, and its health benefits.  All produce was shared out after the event. (30 March 2006)
 

New Food Network for Falkirk
Community Food Development in Falkirk and FVFL are setting up a new Falkirk Food Network to discuss issues around food, many of which were identified as important to local groups and local people from the Falkirk Food Consultation.

Community Food Development, along with Forth Valley Food Links, would like to work with groups / organisations to share best practice: what works, where to get funding, food hygiene training, accessing local produce, what are the key health messages, where to get resources, key speakers etc.

'Unstoppable' Alloa Community Orchard
The Alloa Community Orchard Project held a successful Greenmapping workshop and AGM on 8 February in the Click IT Café, Alloa.

The Orchard Project is a community project established to regenerate the Alloa Walled Garden, owned for over 600 years by the Earls of Mar, and involves local people and organisations from the area as well as wider Clackmannanshire.  It will consist of a community café, play area, learning centre, adventure course, community workshops and community kitchen.

A detailed plan for the garden has been established, and fundraising for the Phase 1 build will be on-going throughout the spring and summer which will include the community workshops, security office, reception area and multi-use venue. Developing market research for the community café and organising the Late Summer Fayre are also major tasks for the team.  FVFL is hoping to link with the project in this latter event as part of the Forth Valley-wide food festival in September. Local food busts stress in Fallin!
FVFL helped put local food to the fore at the recent Christmas Stress Buster event held by the
Stirling Health & Wellbeing Alliance in partnership with Fallin Locality Group in the Alpha Community Centre. The event was held to encourage people to speak in an informal and relaxed setting to staff from agencies providing services which can relieve stress, and to participate in activities relating to their health and well-being.  The event promoted the work of the Alliance and other services in Fallin.

FVFL gave away vegetable soup packs as a special promotion of local producers J & P Scott, of Pleanmill Farm in Airth, who very kindly donated bags of turnips and potatoes for the packs, and A & A Fruits of Sauchieburn who supplied carrots, leeks and onions.

A 'carrot taste test' was held to taste the difference between local and imported carrots.  Of the 19 participants, 16 preferred the taste of the carrot grown in Plean, saying it was sweeter and juicier, whilst 3 preferred the one imported from Italy.  A resounding thumbs-up for local food!

Real Hot News from Catherine's Country Kitchen!

Catherine's Country Kitchen has produced a new hot taste sensation for all chutney fans, and has been named in an unusual way.

Owner, Catherine Neil, said, "Here was I busy in my kitchen conjuring up ANOTHER new chutney with Real Radio playing in the background wondering what I would call this new really hot chilli chutney when I had a flash of inspiration. It was 1st November and Real Radio were raising money for NCH by auctioning several items so I called them with the idea of auctioning the name of the new chutney. The name was bought by Real Radio and is now called Real Radio's Hot Stuff. It has proved very popular. Real Radio came and took some pictures".

Catherine continued, "I also entered one of my chutneys in the Good Food Taste Awards and was lucky enough to get a bronze 'T' to put on my Mango Chutney".

Stirling High Schools are 'Hungry for Success'
Stirling Council will be launching the Hungry for Success Initiative in Stirling Council's Secondary Schools on Wednesday, 6 December in Stirling High School, Stirling. The official launch will be carried out by Provost Colin O'Brien.

The initiative aims to establish standards for school meals across Scotland, improve the take-up through improved presentation, and eliminate any stigma attached to taking school meals.  All secondary schools in Scotland are required to have introduced the Scottish Nutrient Standards for School Lunches by December 2006.  They were introduced into all special and primary schools before December 2004. Local Butchers Authorised to Handle CarcassesThe UK's specified risk material controls have now been harmonised with other EU Member States so that specifically authorised butchers can now handle carcasses of 24 - 30 month old cattle containing SRM vertebral column (or backbone).  The Food Standards Agency has listed local butchers that have been specifically authorised to handle these carcasses:-

Honey Et Cetera Closes - Callander Loses Quality, Local Food Outlet
Honey and bee-product fans will be sorry to learn that Gavin Millar, owner of the excellent Honey Et Cetera shop in Callander, has decided to close his business.  Gavin was a regular at farmers’ markets in the area.  Gavin said, "I’m sorry to be leaving the scene as I’ve enjoyed it and believe very strongly in the ethos behind FVFL".
