The 'Square Foot Gardening' programme is growing in the right direction following the running of a 'Taster' event in Denny at the end of November.'
The event, commissioned by Forth Valley Food Links and hosted at the
Denny WASP (Wider Access to School Project) , was attended by 11 enthusisatic local people, all keen to learn about growing your own food in a small space with minimum resources.
Tutor Mike Hamilton gave an introduction to growing food using the
'Square Foot Gardening' system by a demonstration of a raised bed, pots
and containers, different compost mixes, and growing seeds using paper
pots. Participants had an opportunity to plant their own strawberry plants that Mike had brought along, into paper pots that they had made.
At the end of the session, the participants gave the thumbs-up to the
session, saying that they had really enjoyed it, and had been "inspired" to start growing their own food. Most were so inspired that
10 out of the 11 who attended have signed up to the 4 workshops to be run in March 2009, which will look at planning the plot, assembling the
materials, sowing, planting and maintaining the plot, and harvesting the fruits of their labours.
FVFL is also in discussions with another Falkirk community to run another series of 'Square Foot Gardening' sessions next year.
